Medals or Cash

BCCA Hollis Trophy

‘Correspondence Chess’ recently carried an excellent article on the various trophies held by the Association.  An offshoot of the discussion regarding the future of the BCCA trophies was the suggestion from several players that we should award medals to certain tournament winners: for example, the BCCA champion, 2nd and 3rd, Handicap tournament prize-winners, Webserver tournament prize-winners and the winning BCCL team.

It was felt that the issue of medals, which could be kept as a permanent memento, would actually be better than issuing cash prizes: what do you think? We would welcome the opinion of members on this subject, please write to the editor or leave a comment here.

Medals are far preferable, how many of us play for the money, recently I banked a cheque for £30 for the BFCC open final, at least 7 of the games were played by post….need I say more!
I value the medals I have earned (a couple of PCC league ones) and the certifcates that he BCCA used to give. Looking at the finances the medals work out cheaper than the hasle of small cheques etc

I agree and prefer a certificate or similar item that can be put into a small frame and left on the bookcase or similar place, seems a fitting reward for all those hours of work. I still have an old BCCA certificate for the Trophies much better than a few quid quickly spent on something long forgotten.

At least we have similar views on medals. When my daughter leaves for uni this October I hope I can replace some of the children’s swimming etc certs with some of my own, even now the plans for a display frame for the medals are reaching the seriously thinking stage. I look forward to a host of BCCA medals (well at least I can try!)
